  • How many Hearthstones can you carry efficiently?

I was wondering which artifacts, you would have a character take if you want to have the largest # of active hearthstones effecting the character, NPC or PC. I am also only counting those artifacts that specifically say they have Hearthstone slots, so sadly no Thunderbolt Shields. This is coming up mainly as a thought excercise but who knows it could be interesting.

I think it would be Crown of Thunders, Wave Cleaver, Hearthstone Bracers, Reinforced Breastplate. Hearthstone Amulet.

Oh and yes, I realize how many background points this would end up costing . 10 artifact points for 8 slots?

Depends on if your ST Sees the Hearthstone socket artifact (can't remember it's name and I'm at work right now) is a valid artifact

One of my Sidereals has five Hearthstones. I made him a custom Hearthstone Belt which has five sockets and uses the mote regen of one of the HS instead of attunement cost; to do otherwise would have been murder on both my xp and attunement costs.

But really, if you're at the stage where you take the freaking Crown of Thunder has "just more Hearthstone sockets," something went horribly wrong.

I would take four Skin Mount Amulets on top of that. (Totally legit Myrrun does it.)

Also doesn't a Grand Diaklave have 3 sockets (over the Wave Cleaver's 2)? And if your Strength is high enough, why not wield two of those bad-boys?

Where does it specifically say that a Reinforced Breastplate gets a Hearthstone slot (the only canon example I can think of off hand is Mnemon's - but I don't have my books)?

Is wearing a Dragon Tear Tiara under the Crown of Thunders legit?

Wearing Power Armour gives you, what, three hearthstone slots (well, you need one of them to power the armour, but that's still two slots right)?

Omicron, I was just trying to keep the artifact costs down to reasonable levels, and keeping it efficient. The Crown of Thunders having three slots is just gravy, I understand how utterly awesome it is.

John Doe, good point on the Grand Daiklave, but I personally wouldn't let someone use more than one. Oh and I believe the armor thing is from 1st edition, where I could swear it said that a Reinforced BP had a slot. I don't think two hat/helmets are ever legitimate. I also get yelled at by players, and storytellers whenever I try to use Celestial Battle Armor as an ST or player.

The primary limiting factor is how many motes you devote to attuning artifacts, then how draconian your Storyteller is about the work it takes to maintain artifact (and manse!) attunements, Exalted doesn't have "equipment slots" like D&D or an MMO. A dozen Hearthstone Amulets will all work just fine if you wear them together. Skin mount amulets giving you a mote instead of costing one is part of what makes them problematic.

Also remember that hearthstones just have to stay in contact with your skin; Hybrid Body Rearrangement + a tasty marsupial in your library = as many hearthstones as you can cram in your new pouch (until you want to shapeshif again, anyway.

Well, I tend to let things like Hearthstone Amulets and Dragon Tear Tiaras to take other forms, like rings, brooches, etcetera.

There are a few other artifacts that can carry hearthstones, like three dot Jade Saddles, Belts of Aerial Mobility, Metasorcerous Phylacteries, Wings of the Raptor, Torcs of Unified Action, and Dream Broadcaster crowns.

For armour, Discreet Essence Armour and Deadly Transformation Armour both have a socket, and Armour of Aquatic Puissance has two. Dragon Armour and Celestial Battle Armour have three, one of which is needed for power.

That only applies to the mote regen benefits. To get the powers they need to be slotted in something. See the Scroll of Errata for the distinction between attuned and resonant hearthstones.

Quite right, my bad. Still though, the point I was trying to make is the premise of the question is flawed. You don't maximize your hearthstone slots by finding the hat with the most sockets, the weapon with the most sockets, the armor with the most sockets, and so on. Exalted doesn't have "gear slots". If I'm attuned to a daiklave I get the benefit of its sockets even if it's one of five daiklaves I have strapped to my back in scabbards.

So the answer is a bunch of Wavecleavers banished to Elsewhere?

Perhaps I wasn't clear about the most that "possibly" could be carried with artifacts not being used. But outfitting yourself with as many functional artifacts/hearthstones. Thanks for point out a few of those, I really like the idea of the Jade Saddle for another character concept I had played around with.

The famous First Age solar architect, Kal Bax has been known to posess a necklace of 108 hearthstones. Just saying.

(just please, don't ask how big it was. Considering the average size of a hearthstone i just can't really imagine that thing)

Kal Bax was a transcendentally skilled geomancer. I suspect it looked like whatever he wanted it to (maybe even remaking it entirely every few years).
