  • Oracle the Endbringers (Fan-Splat)

Months ago there was a discussion on one of the Chronicles of Darkness discords about "How would you handle a time-manipulation/travel fansplat", after months of thinking on the subject I eventually decided to start writing down the idea to get my fansplat pitch into a playtest-ready state. Oracle the Endbringers is the result. In version 0.1, there is primarily only mechanics with some flavour here for clarity, but there is currently enough to be playtested so I thought it would be best to release it and await the bats to be taken to it. It is definitely not flawless and there is much more content to add, but hopefully with the playtesting of my group and any comments of others it will be refined.

In Oracle you play a person who was cursed with visions of a coming apocalypse by a god, but blessed with the power to fight against the inevitable. From then onwards you are a person partially outside of time, doomed to a time loop until you either succeed in your divine mission or the apocalypse becomes so impossible to stop that your timeline is sealed away. Together you will work with similarly blessed souls to form a pantheon, hoping to use your control over time and the gifts of your god to wage war against destiny itself.
    Link to the RPG.

That reminds me to add Worm to the inspiration section for next update.

Worm style Endbringers were something that was in my mind when it came to adding the Behemoth Vision. Leviathan fight was such a cool time in the story.

Nice idea for a splat. Not meaning to sound rude, but if it helps ideas or whatnot, Siren the Drowning is similar. Just more mermaids, driven by love to keep humanity alive and whatnot. Good luck on the fansplat. :3

You don't sound rude at all. From my (possibly poor) memory core similarity is that the characters of both splats have a vision of the apocalypse that they're mainly trying to prevent? Oracles don't have any actual powers themselves outside of being able to commune with a god + can go on vision quests into the astral, oracles are more punk "fight the power" and "assassinate x dude so doomsday never comes" than love, and are more time-travelly/time-manipulating. I'll probably still give Siren a read though.

You know the premise of this is kinda similar to the mood and theme of Genius' Klagen Catalyst. They would often gain knowledge of an impending disaster and seek to divert by seeking solutions through Inspired (mad) science only for their peers to disbelieve them and call them mad! (lol)

Sounds like that Catalyst is drawing heavily on the myth of Cassandra. I draw on that story to a degree.

Actually that Catalyst of Sorrow did draw so much off of it that a Klagen's ingame nickname is Cassandra.

Seems interesting, but has a looooot of new mechanics to look through. I like it though!

I ended up using Cassandra as the example character for developing your daimon's miracles.

Thanks. The hope is that it wont be too overwhelming mechanically but I made sure that when I did first release that it should be in a playable state from the jump.

Okay, time for the first update since it's been three weeks. The link in the first post should now take people to a google drive folder which has the latest version of the pdf, a changelog, and a doc where I'll be chucking any mechanical widgets like miracles/merits/orisons that I develop between the versions.

One of the big additions is full text on the Theme and Mood of the game rather than just three abbreviated lines, a full flavour write-up for Exemplars rather than just the mechanical information on them, and some example Antagonists. In addition to some mechanical tweaks and adding content like more merits and miracles.

Please inform me if there are any issues with the folder or documents, or if you have any criticisms of the game.

Can anyone explain me what are the daemons? do they originate from the oracle or from the deity?

Daimons are the deities. I might tweak some wordings here and there to make that clearer.

Maybe the Temple Merit could be changed to (*-*****+), like equivalent Merits from other game-lines? Also, how do Oracles view other Splats (be they Major or Minor, Official or Fan-Made)?

I could though, I don't know I have enough options for that to work very well at present.

I'm unsure how to handle this, since there aren't societies of Oracles it's hard to make generalizations.
