  • Damnation City questions and other useful world building resources

Yeah I know I usually start these threads in response to a kickstarter, but I need some advice.

So the last product update e-mail from Onyx Path was about the new Mage Anthology primarily. However, it also mentioned that Damnation City is also a POD title now.

I've read most of the books that came out for Requiem 1.0 over the years. Damnation City is one of the few I missed out on when it was first released and never got around to reading later. I know from seeing it on print shelves back in the day that it was a pretty massive book (300+ pages or so I think).

From the general buzz I get on the interweb its considered one of the best (if not the best) supplement that Requiem 1.0 received. So naturally I'm interested with press like that.

At the moment I'm kinda on-and-off again working on a two new WoD settings when I get the time:

    1) NWoD - 2nd Edition Heavy: This is designed to be my "default" world/metaphysics for games of Vampire, Promethean and Demon. At a later date I might edit it to include Beast, Hunter and Mummy once they get second editions. It's primarily focused around the city of Leeds, but all of Yorkshire is pretty much needing to be fleshed out. The rest of the UK needs to be sketched out and Europe needs at least a loose structure.

    2) CWoD - 20th Editions: This is a world starting out in V20 Dark Ages and moving into the modern day. At which point it becomes a world I want to also run M20 and Wr20 in. The same areas as the NWoD world need planning basically. Maybe some American stuff as well...maybe.

Usually I have no problem coming up with metaphysics, that still the case. However, these two worlds are much larger in scope and more detailed then any that I've done before. So its pretty daunting for me. My usual methods also have stalled quite a bit after I got past the first two dozen or so NPC's and the larger "blocking" of the City of Leeds. Needless to say, I'm looking for some materials to help me out.

Obviously, Damnation City is a Requiem 1.0 sourcebook. As such I have two questions about it:

    1) Is it useful for other gamelines (such as the ones I've mentioned above)? If it is useful to what extent is it so? How much of its content only really applies to the Kindred?

    2) How well does it mesh with the 2nd Ed books/CWoD books?

Other then that, I am wondering if people can point to towards any useful review of the book in addition to any feedback they can provide.

Finally, if anyone knows any other good world building/city building RPG books I'd appreciate the recommendations. In the same line, anyone who does a lot of their planning on a computer who can point me towards useful programs (flow chart, city builder, note indexers etc) that have helped them build worlds/settings I would appreciate it.

    Thanks,

    Hawthorn

Both Damnation City and Block by Blood Block are fantastic city-building resources, regardless of what line they were originally printed for. I'd definitely steer you towards both.

As an aside, if you're looking to make a map, DriveThru has a free Damnation City segment maid of map segments. If that's too much work, just steal a city off Google Maps and redraw the lines,

I believe Rose posted somewhere that Damnation City is really where Vampire 2nd starts kicking in. Some of the crunch needs a bit off tweaking, but some of it is still very useful. Honestly, Damnation City is useful for just about every WoD game, Classic or New.

Aside from some powers that interact with ambience and attitude, It's really edition neutral.

However, I kinda wish for very simple updates in how other splats relate to the city in the same fashion. Hunter's Block by Blood Block is a quick and dirty way of doing it but it's Hunter-centric and while it works find for Cells and perhaps Forsaken, but Changelings would be well served along with Arisen and Demon with a system that a Damnation City update would provide.
