  • Which Supernatural Style Comes Next?

    Namely, which of the following Supernatural Merits should I make a Style Merit for next?

    1. Apportation
    2. Curse Effigy
    3. Evil Eye
    4. Hardened Exorcist
    5. Incite Ecosystem
    6. Laying on Hands
    7. Mind of a Madman
    8. Numbing Touch
    9. Thief of Fate

    Those 9 are the Supernatural Merits where I have some idea of how they would expand into a style - if anyone has any other suggestions once I'm under way, I will take them into consideration.


    I have decided, after some thought, that I don't really feel happy on these forums. I might decide to come back to post. Who knows - but right now, I'm gone.

    Thief of Fate seems easily expandable.

    Where is Incite Ecosystem from, though?

        Hurt locker, it allows someone to sic animals on people.

        As for the supernatural styles I'd like to see, I'd vote for Apportation, Evil Eye, Mind of a Madman, and Thief of Fate.

            I wanna see Hardened Exorcist. I assume it is going to be only for characters without a major template, seeing as how the latter have their own powers and methods to deal with entities that must be exorcised. Mortal occultists, on the other hand, would benefit immensely from whatever advantages they can get in order to oppose entities of higher Rank. I'm guessing that the "Hardened" part means there will be some drawbacks related to Integrity.

              Uhm, every single choice is based on a supernatural merit, which by definition, the vast majority of templates, major or lesser, are incapable of having.

              So barring dragons with that coil with the really weird name for buying supernatural merits, or someone using dark heroes in a second edition game, it pretty much mortals and stigmatics only.

              Oh that reminds me, how about a supernatural style for a microtemplate? They are just themed supernatural merits after all.

                Eh, the microtemplates would be a different "thing" - it'd be filling in, rather than expanding, if that makes sense.

                Portage (Supernatural; Style • - •••••)
                You have become an expert with your "trick" - you can rip things through the between-spaces like no-one's business.
                Prerequisites: Apportation •••, Science •••, Occult •••
                Heisenberg Uncertainty (•) - Due to practice with rapidly calculating vectors and rough positional coordinates, you've developed a certain deftness. Reduce any penalties you suffer to your Apportation roll by your dots in Science.
                Tripping the Gap (••) - You are always a valid target for your own Apportation, regardless of whether or not you would normally be able to affect objects your size. In addition, you gain your dots in Apportation as general armor against damage inflicted by Apportation.
                God's Own Angles (•••) - Your mastery of inconstant positioning allows you to strike from completely unexpected angles. Whenever you spend Willpower on an attack, you may forgo the normal bonus to instead ignore up to a yard of cover between you and your target. If you spent time aiming, you may add the bonus from aiming to the number of yards of cover you can "skip". If this would be sufficient to ignore the cover they are hiding behind, you also ignore any penalty from Concealment on that attack.
                Sound of the Tindalos (••••) - Rather than ripping a single object through reality, you can set up a sort of "standing wave" around yourself, rendering your position locally undefinable. Spend one WIllpower and roll Resolve + Occult; for a number of turns equal to your Successes, you may calculate your Defense using your Resolve + Occult, and may apply your Defense against Firearms attacks and surprise attacks. In addition, your Speed increases to Size + Resolve + Science + Occult. You may snap back to reality as a Reflexive action, ending these benefits prematurely.
                Drawback: Staying unstuck from reality for too long is dangerous. You suffer 1B each turn you spend "unhinged" from reality. As a strange aside, you are also considered to be Infrastructure for as long as Sound of the Tindalos is active; you trigger relevant senses, have the relevant vulnerabilities, and might eventually become a Stigmatic.
                Occult Geometries (•••••) - Normally, there is some allowance for safety incorporated into Apportation - at this point, you figure out a certain level of... precision. You may now use Apportation to target specific parts of an animate character; doing so requires imposes the appropriate Called Shot penalty on top of the -3 penalty for targeting a moving part. As long as you achieve at least one success, the target character suffers one level of Aggravated damage and an appropriate tilt. As a general rule, you can use Apportation for Down and Dirty Combat once you've achieved this level of finesse.
                Drawback: For obvious reasons, the target of this use of Apportation is always considered unwilling.

                    Black Kitty-Cat [Supernatural; Style • - •••••]
                    You have the capacity to be a living embodiment of Murphy's Law - the best response to seeing that you are around is walking the other way.
                    Prerequisite: Thief of Fate, Manipulation ••, Presence •••
                    Stray Cat Strut (•): You are an endless dynamo of good cheer and luck. You can't say that much for those who you touch. On days where you've stolen someone's luck, you gain an additional Willpower dot - this dot is filled when you first gain it, and is always spent first. Meanwhile, your victims instead lose one Willpower dot while suffering the effects of Thief of Fate; they immediately regain that Willpower dot once their luck returns.
                    Demon Kitty Rag (••): You can intensify your luck-theft, piggybacking on deprecated elements of reality. You may spend one Willpower to let your luck-theft permeate the scene; for the rest of the scene, any character other than you that does something considered "unlucky" is affected by your Thief of Fate.
                    Cat-Scratch Fever (•••): At least you've got your health! Again, this cannot be said about the poor people whose luck you've robbed. On any day where you've stolen someone's luck, you gain a temporary Health Level and spending Willpower to improve your Stamina gives you a +3 bonus rather than a +2 bonus. Meanwhile, your victims take 1 level of Bashing damage each time they spend Willpower while suffering the effects of Thief of Fate.
                    Catgroove (••••): Nothing is going to ruin your groove - and everything's going to screw up theirs. On any day you've stolen someone's luck, you gain 1/1 Armor whenever you aren't wearing any other armor. Meanwhile, the poor people you stole your luck from treat applying their Defense against an attack as if it were spending Willpower for the purposes of Cat-Scratch Fever.
                    Cat's In The Cradle (•••••): You're a regular bad-luck charm - on any day you've stolen someone's luck, you may choose to double the benefits of either Stray-Cat Strut or Cat-Scratch Fever. If you do so, your victims lose one point of Willpower when you touch them, and take an additional level of Bashing damage due to Cat-Scratch Fever.

                    Gee, I wonder if anyone can guess the theme to this one?

                    This might seem a bit strong - however, most of the benefits are primarily defensive, and are mostly there to tempt you to use Thief of Fate more often. The second dot is potent, but hard to use without significant set-up.

                    Any character who has Luck Flows Up may substitute it for Thief of Fate for the purposes of Black Kitty-Cat.

                        I have a tendency to write merits and stuff like that instead of doing my classwork. It's... a thing.

                            Not that I'm industrious enough to do it myself, but I had the thought that one could make "supernatural styles" essentially that didn't actually use supernatural merits as the base.

                            Why not say a vampire that can do a lot more with protean 2 than most could dream of, etc?

                            Or if one wants to continue with the theme of making mortals more powerful, how about a style based on a skill trick from mirrors, or whatever they call the advantages for heroic mortals from SDL?

                              Those already exist - they're called Devotions.

                              Because most of those are really passive? The only reason I can build more stuff off of stuff like Apportation and Thief of Fate is because they involve you doing something.

                              Most Skill Tricks are either Speciality++ or something that got swallowed up by merits in 2e. The stuff in SDL... dudeness, Boosts were just "you get a dot or two of [BLANK]".Yeah, you had that one boost that let you gain two Willpower instead of one whenever you would gain one Willpower... but that's not exactly something you can build off of.


                              I might seem to be a bit hostile here, but building 5-dot styles that don't overlap (a big concern with Supernatural stuff, since they should feel different), which aren't lolcrazy, and which can't be easily covered by pre-existing merits is already pretty challenging.

                              Having to build stuff off of glorified specialities is... not something I'd look forward to.
