  • Cinder writes about Beast: The Primordial

Hello everyone, Cinder here. Long story short, I love pretty much all the games written by White Wolf and Onyx Path. Speaking of World Of Darkness, my favorites are Apocalypse and Demon. For the Chronicles of Darkness, the honor goes to Forsaken and Promethean. There's also Scion.

My most beloved of them all, though, has to be Beast: The Primordial.

Can't say exactly why, at least not quickly, but its themes, aesthetics and narrative just clicked with me as I was reading the Kickstarter prewiew. Now, Beast is still a young gameline but it had a turbolent life. I loved it from the start, but I'm also one of those who agree that the changes made during the Kickstarter overall improved it a lot. Some of its aspects can be taken the wrong way, some are tricky to play with and the echo chamber of the Web made the game no favors, but I'm of the opinion the game's still solid and beautifully written, a start from which things can only improve.

By the time I'm writing this, I'm eagerly waiting for the Player's and Storyteller's guides, feeling from what we know they'll really open up the game. We Beast fans are passionate and loyal but, ironically enough, hunger for new content and hope more and more people will eventually come to love this little, beautiful and fearsome game as much as we do.

In the meantime though, I decided to write a series of post with the hope they'll show people the potential and greatness I see when I look at Beast. It's a self-appointed mission and one I'm aware I can be obnoxious about. When I say that I'm afraid people around here will eventually get annoyed by me not shutting up about Beast, especially since I'm just a random guy, I'm joking but not that much. Being deliberate and conscious about this is only a recent thing, the result of me dealing with some conflicts, ideas and turmoils I have with the game and turning them into a productive impulse. Still, I do believe that, within my rants, there's at least some good to find. Ideas, story hooks and perspectives that might persuade people to give a chance to the game. If that happens, I can live with the reputation of being a nuisance.

This thread is meant to be the hub thread for my Beast posts. Gonna put a link to this in my signature, hoping that some will click on it and look at what I wrote. I hope they'll join the discussion but, at the very least, they'll see a demonstration of my passion for the game.

    Essays & Game Hacks:

    - 0: About Lessons, Revelations and the Dark Mother. Not a part of my planned series of essays, but the first of the threads I made to rant about Beast. You can see traces of what would happen later here.

    - 1: Beast & Primordial Gnosticism

    - 2: Reconciliation with existence as a Begotten

    - 3: Mythology

-4: Identity, Family and a little of chronicle building

    -5: The Hero Essay

    Other:

    - Nightmares & Dreamscapes: Incursions from the Primordial Dream. Open thread about denizens and critters of the Primordial Dream. If you have some ideas and want to share them, you're welcome and encouraged to do so.

    - New Family: Irkalla, Nightmare of the End.

    - Klaus & Krampus. My silly Christmas bonus for 2017: the two characters statted as Beasts

    Fiction:

I also write CoD fanfiction. It's not that good, but I aim to improve. Those I wrote so far are centered on Beast. I posted them around here as well, but the forum is not supposed to used be for fiction posting and makes it a little hard to read, so I personally suggest to check those here, if you're interested

There’s no Storyteller’s Guide in the pipeline yet. Hopefully the Player’s Guide won’t take much longer.

Not yet, but eventually. Unless the plans changed, of course (if that's the case, then I was not aware of it). But hey, gotta believe in the future, am I right?

Very interesting read. I've not read everything yet (christmas vacation are anything but vacations sigh) but i am enjoying what i read so far.
Also, i think it should be noted that i had a very negative first impression of Beast (tho i wasnt aware of the kickstarter or the polemic raised on the internet when i first read it) and this is really turning me around.
I think i might add a Beast npc in the requiem game i am running.

Completed campaign: Scion 2nd Edition. Les Légendes Currently playing: Being a dad for a 3 year old daughter and a 2 years old son and now a beautiful new baby.

Well, that's indeed my best case scenario. Was not sure it would happen at all. Thanks for letting me know what I wrote and will write is having this effect: it really means a lot

As far as I'm aware, the Storytellers Guide is still in the outline phase, although I haven't heard anything further in a couple months, so I could be wrong. My guess is that writing probably won't begin until the Players Guide is released so that the writers will be able reference it.

Seems logical. I have no knowledge of what happens behind the scenes, but if it goes the same as it did with Demon, I seem to recall the work on the Storyteller's Guide really only started after the Player's Guide was done and delivered (could be wrong about that). Which is just common sense, I think.

But having those two guides as a sort of starting point from any gameline supplements is something I always found the best option, since back in the day with the World Of Darkness. Loved how the Descent Guides turned out, they explain a lot of what the core had to cut out and add plenty of new stuff, so I have no reason to believe Beast will do less than that

I’m confident there will be one someday, but wanted to just be clear that there isn’t one being worked on yet.

It's alright. I'm way more reasonable and controlled than this thread would suggest, even when talking about Beast. If it came through as if I was saying to people that the Storyteller's Guide is already being worked on, it's my bad.

I tend to amp up the enthusiasm for the sake of having a fun discussion, but sometimes the result is me giving the wrong impression. My apologies.

EDIT: Speaking of exaggerated enthusiasm, I have discovered the Persona series about ten days ago and it turns out it covers a lot of the things also covered by Beast. Be afraid of what happens next.

Working on the Mythology essay right now.

I've finished the planning phase and will start writing the real deal soon. Turns out it will be slightly longer because I want to tackle three main points with it: what it means for Beasts and Heroes to be actual living myths (I'll explore my idea that being so is kinda addictive here, among other things), being the inheritors of a legendary legacy and all it entails (including what it means to merge with an ancient Horror: is it becoming part of a dinasty? Reincarnation? Possession? A sort of Exaltation? ), plus the practical pros and cons of the mythic cycle messing with your life whether you like it or not.

The Mythophagi, creatures that impose a mythic narrative on others and feed from it taking place, will be posted in the Nightmares & Dreamscapes thread. They're an addendum to the essay since they highlight some of the ideas I have but they're just critters: no need to read the essay to have fun with them. I'll write them up with mechanics, sample characters and conditions some time after I finish the analysis, but I promise I won't start doing other things until I'm done.

Still using my idea of having the creatures of the Primordial Dream mirror a sort of twisted ecosystem. Which is a fancy way of saying I steal ideas from animals and plants. The Night Terrors were basically the equivalent of of a pilot fish or those birds who keep predators clean. The Mythopagi are more similar to a cuckoo or that fungus that alters the behavior of slugs and ants, except they take advantage of Heroes, Beast and Family

After it I'll have to write a couple of things outside the essay series. Got some stuff I promised to finish and update.

The essay ideas left for now are the Lessons, Heroes, Dark Mother and Jung essay. If you have preferences about what I should do first or suggestions about something else, let me know.

Just wanted to say that I'm not gone, but life has been kinda tough lately and put all kinds of productive efforts to an unfortunate hiatus.

I have my books right there and there's nothing I'd like more than to read them, make notes, tinker with mechanics and write some stuff, but I'm not able to do so for a series of reasons.

Sorry about that, I promise I'll return to work as soon as possible.

Since I've the physical need to write something that is not related to life obligations of any sort but my creative fuel is burnt out because of those, would anyone be interested in reading a Beast essay about my take on Identity, Family, why they matter and how to build a game around those central themes?

That's something I had in mind for a while that I feel I can still enjoy and write decently even at the moment.
