Baseline expectations are important too. There's always a degree of 'the book says this, so it works this way' and trying to break out of that with a lot of people is a big source of friction.
THis design more or less explicitly kills the "but it's non-standard" argument, which has been a much bigger issue than the regional/global divide.

That said, the far extending courts have an implicit presence. In chatting with folks about it, I feel I can mention that the Seasonal Courts are still a thing a lot of Europe and North America use, for instance. Hell, Toronto sort of points at this with the Silver Court being a recent consolidation of the Seasonal(and Seelie) Courts. But I can see the concern...

though again, knowing play groups as I do, I imagine a common thing said at tables will be "Hey, y'all just wanna run with the Seasons?", which more or less obviates the point for me.

    • After reading through the rough draft I can honestly say that this is the kind of thing that the 2nd edition books are doing right. you can use what ever you want when ever you want where ever want and make it feel organic. want to use the seasonal courts from first edition? sure go ahead. the seelie/unseelie courts of changeling: the dreaming, why not? the game will literally change its self to fit your taste without being obtrusive. my only question is, what happens if a Courtless changeling wins the contest? does that break the bullwork or does the wyrd let it happen with out much fuss?

      • Courtless characters are in a bit of a bind as is, yeah.

Funnily enough, my first thought is that'll make for great supplement fodder. But I imagine it'll be a problem for a complete core, yeah.

        • So getting back to actual court creation, specifically for the Rose Courts, you know what I just realized also has a Maiden/Wild One/Woodsman connotation, as well as utterly breaks the narrative, and implies a setting for the Maison du Regret(Rose Gate/Treasure Hold of Diana/Grandmother's House)*, and in fact becomes even more interesting based on the number of real facts that influenced the writing of the fiction?

          Phantom of the Opera.

          This just got more awesome.

*The Palais Garnier is the 'porch', 'opening hallway', and 'waiting room' of the Maison du Regret.

          • The biggest issue I had with the Seasonal Courts is that while they're great for some parts of the world, they're useless for a fair chunk. In Southern California the "seasons" are 3 to 5 years of dry and half a year of flooding. In Hawaii, Thailand, Philippines, Okinawa, &c, it's Monsoon season and Not-monsoon season. Canada? Always moose season.

I just treat Seasonal Courts as major power in Europe and Europe-centric colonies, because of their Roman roots. But I agree the problem with "foreign places" to it's usage - in Poland, I envision that half country would be under Seasonal Courts ( German occupation of few centuries and more "Western" culture in there ) and other half under Courts of Day and Night ( even if I'm not sure they are good Slavic faith representation ).

For example, mine home city of Lublin would probably have both Seasonal and Day/Night Courts. But I must agree, I have a large problem of Tale that would work with this two groups of Courts then.

Hey! Idea for an alternative 'Seasonal' system - a wide-ranging group of small towns forming a freehold, and the courts based around different Hunting Seasons!

                • Been thinking of a court write-up for Budapest. It's not my city, but it is the capital of my country (Hungary) and has a history of being taken over by other empires. Been thinking of a Turkish court, a Habsburg court and a medieval Hungarian court as the major ones, with other courts based on history of the country as well. Bulwark would probably be either playing out sieges of the city, with the defendant being last year's monarch and the attacker being one court who jumped through the right hoops. Will need to research a lot for it, and not sure if historic courts are the right ones here, but seems like a fun idea.

                  • I think Budapest is going to be one of the cities in the Changeling 2e Corebook.

As part of Hunyadi Dorjàn's writeup on Night Horrors: Inmortal Sinners is my best guess.

                            EDIT: Also Brookshaw's

The Wabbit Court and the Duck Court don't get along very well.

Though when they do, the Elmer Court runs faster than if they had Strangers on their coat tails.
