  • 7 Pre-gen Lares, Exiled Angels in the form of buildings

    Lares

Lares are exiled angels trapped inside Infrastructure/Facilities. They typically have similar stats to normal Angels except for the fact that they are buildings and as such have a Size greater than the usual and have Structure instead of Corpus. They also aren’t able to Manifest or switch into Twilight Form.
    Explanation of My Quick Stats

In order to speed up the NPC Angel creation process I mathematically I came up with the average range of stats for an Angel given their rank. Quick rule of thumb, Angels Rank 4 and higher are meant to be nearly impossible to fight.
    Rank 1

These people are bottom of the Angel hierarchy, given responsibility for carrying out simple tasks by the God-Machine. They seldom are able to blend in with Mortals unless that is a specific part of their mission parameters. Their Bans and Banes are easy to identify with a little bit of research and quite common to find.
    Pinball Master Arcade/Arcade

The God-Machine created the arcade as a means to test children for future work as agents of the God-Machine. Most of the arcade machines are tied to an Angelic presence trapped inside it’s foundation. Arcade itself has grown tired of dealing with human children, but does deal in information. It can communicate through the intercom system as well as through various arcade machines, e.g. Pacman talking to passerbys. Arcade does accept new arcade machines as currency as it longs to have new experiences.

    • Vice = Sloth
    • Incarnation = Analyst
    • Attack/Initiative = 4
    • Skill Checks = 3

      • Hallucinations
      • Strike Blind
    • Ban
      • Must accept prize tickets as currency.
    • Bane
      • Clogged coin slots.
    • Possible Fall
      • If Arcade is pushed to create its own levels for existing arcade machines it will fall and become a humanoid Demon.
    Public Park Restroom/Jonathan

The God-Machine forged Jonathan into a restroom. Not even Jonathan knew why he got this assignment. As soon as he was in place he became an Exile, before he knew what his mission was. Jonthan has been trying to get out of his crap predicament for too long. He has been “haunting” the bathroom in hopes of attracting the attention of an Angel or Demon. Unlike many Angels he wants to fall, thinking it will release him from his porcelain prison.

    • Vice = Idle Conversation

    • Possible Fall
      • Jonathan has been trying to Fall on purpose for quite a long time, but he’s had shit luck. Without knowing his purpose he has no clue what to do. It could be a side mission to identify his purpose or Bane to put him out of his misery.
    Rank 2

These Angels are more competent than the Rank 1 variety. They are given more important missions that require more complex thinking and manuevaring, but have trouble with problem solving outside of their mission parameters. Their Bans and Banes aren’t immediately apparent, but usually are related to their current Cover and are usually easy to comeby.
    Drug Den/Aurora

Aurora was assigned to run a drug den. When the Psychopomp Angel assigned to finish the Den was nearing completion they bound Aurora into the gears. Since then Aurora has been running the Drug Ring as an unseen drug lord. Her followers are Stigmatics who were drug addicts that heard her voice when they tripped. On multiple occasions competitors have cleared her out looking for a person, but finding no one.On at least one occasion an individual has tried burning her down.

    • Bane

    • Possible Fall
      • Aurora falls when she has no clients and cannot perform her duties as a drug lord.
    Rank 3

These are the typical Angel that most Demons will encounter. Rank 3’s are above average human intelligence when it comes to improvising within their mission parameters. These Angels can typically pass for Mortals, but can usually be identified by Supernaturals. The Bans and Banes for them are difficult to pin down, usually requiring people to go out of their way to track them down. Sometimes a Bane will be a common object, but that has an additional metaphysical quality about it, such as a gift that wasn’t accepted.
    St. Alberts Hospital/Albert

Organ donors are everywhere and Albert was assigned to help redistribute human body parts for the God-Machine. When the hospital was built Albert ran it with fervour, making sure to collect organ donor body parts as much as he could without being discovered. He was too efficient at his job and misstepped into one of the infrastructure’s gears. Trapped and Exiled Albert took to continuing his tasks of collecting organs, but with no place for them to go as the Infrastructure was damaged. He persevered and began his own experiments. He has become a back alley doctor to many Exiles and Demons alike who need assistance, as long as they don’t disrupt his building he grants them safety.
    • Rank 3
    • Virtue = Inquisitive
    • Vice = Clumsy
    • Incarnation = Psychopomp
    • Attack/Initiative = 12
    • Skill Checks = 9

      • Strike Blind
    • Ban
      • Cannot injure those who are not organ donors.
    • Bane
      • Being stuck with an infected needle.
    • Possible Fall
      • If Albert is convinced to stop harvesting organs, though he loves doing it for his experiments so it’s hard to convince him.
    Rank 4

When encountering a Rank 4 or higher Angel the main course of action is to run and hide. These beings are typically given the role of overseeing key Occult Matrices to the God-Machine and are more likely to delegate to Stigmatics and lower ranked Angels than to get their hands dirty. They are quite powerful and many can easily avoid detection by Supernatural entities. The Bans and Banes for these powerful entities are very rare, typically a very unique mundane item with special significance.
    Graveyard/Sharon

Sharon was designed to protect and ferry souls to the God-Machine. The souls get converted into essence for other Angels to refuel. Demons attacked the supply lines that ran from her graveyard, leaving her cut off from her purpose. She still carries on processing the souls and using it for her own machinations. The graveyard is notoriously haunted with various undead patrolling its grounds all under the command of Sharon.
    • Rank 4
    • Virtue = Mercy
    • Vice = Wrath
    • Incarnation = Guardian.
    • Attack/Initiative = 20
    • Skill Checks = 14
    • Structure = 70

      • Ex Nihilo
      • Inexorable Pursuit
      • Seek
      • Resurrection
      • Mortal Mask
    • Ban
      • Cannot cause direct or indirect injury to clergy.
    • Bane
      • Burying the bones of a long dead Pope inside her grounds.
    • Possible Fall
      • Sharon could Fall if she stops taking in bodies. As a powerful Angel she will use her undead minions to help fill those graves with souls.
    Rank 5

Any Angel at this rank or higher is called an Archangel. They typically oversee the construction of multiple Occult Matrices and command a host of lower ranked Angels. There might be only one Rank 5 Angel within an entire region at one time, the God-Machine does not like imbuing too many Angels with so much power. Their mission parameters are typically quite complex and require decades to come to fruition. They are so powerful that only equally powerful entities can usually discern what exactly they are. The Bans and Banes for such an entity are very specific and rare that not many will be able to locate them. Such items are usually unique artifacts from ancient times that are not anywhere near the Angel. A person’s best chance against an entity like this is to trick it into Falling and then killing the weaker Demon it turns into.
    Haunted Mansion/Tiphanie

Tiphanie has existed as an Exile for longer than most. She was assigned to kill off guests at a fancy party. She was assigned as a murder house, but when her job was done she was stuck in a loop resulting in becoming an Exile. Every year she sends out invitations to a dinner party to seemingly random people who are compelled to come.

      • Stabbing the portrait of a woman in the foyer with a wooden stake created from a support beam of an English Castle.
    • Possible Fall
      • Sharon could Fall if she stops taking in bodies. As a powerful Angel she will use her undead minions to help fill those graves with souls.

Is it canon that lower Rank angels are less intelligent and less able to blend in than higher Rank angels?

It's implied, Mr. Shivers (DtD: Core page 218) is so far the only Rank 1 Angel I've seen and his description says he has a disarming smile and fails to blink from time to time. He can carry conversations, but they are pretense before he strikes. His Methods section states he doesn't understand humanity and is cold/distant to people even though he is constantly smiling.

There are two more in the God-Machine Chronicle. Grief doesn't have much about what his personality is, but seems to be introverted. One of them is living art that attacks those who get too close. The Polis Men "don’t have much in the way of agency or free will", and are seen more as an automated defense system. Additionally there are multiple Polis Men who are in Seattle, so they are mass produced in someway.

I haven't read every Angel, but the pattern seems to be that Rank 1s are more geared towards their objective and can maybe be mass produced.

Also note that Rank 1 entities use the higher of two stats instead of the lower when deriving Defense. That's usually reserved for animals.

To say nothing of the fact that Demon's iteration of the Hunted Condition has three different options for the pursuers it represents and the angelic options bottom out at Rank 2.

Rank 1 angels are a step above Imperatives, but the way angelic Rank usually works means they're not assigned to Super Important Missions by definition.

Ah! Truly useful stuff. It helps me conceptualize these entities better, having stats to pore over...

Yes, but weaker doesn't always mean dumber.

Gafflings are equated with animals and children in the social hierarchy of the Shadow. Lares can potentially pass for functioning humans but are stuck in loops to do with the circumstances of their deaths. Temenotic residents are Rank 1 personlike individuals with no supernatural powers but are functionally a step above living scenery and can't be made to recognize that the world they inhabit is a dream. Hagis has provided a handy list of examples of Rank 1 angels and none of them paint an especially flattering picture of their intellect and capacity for independent thought.

Combined with the average Rank 1 ephemeral being having a human Attribute limit, a limited number of Attribute dots to work with, a narrowly-defined Skill-equivalent to add to their pools, and the most disruptive and easily-attained sort of bans and banes possible, I think it is reasonable to say that in this particular case it does, at least insofar as "dumber" means "less able to match the average informed human in a non-lopsided contest."

I wouldn't say Dumber, but I'd definitely say awkward, kind of like Castiel from Supernatural not knowing anything about Pop Culture/Socializing. You might have a Rank 1 Destroyer Angel assigned to kill a gang member, but if she is approached by a prostitute she'd be oblivious to what that is.

On the flip side, a Rank 1 Messenger Angel assigned a Punk Rocker Cover to inspire a musician might be really great at fitting in at a nightclub or concert, but when the conversation turns to politics people start noticing that they don't have any opinion and falling back on canned responses, "Fight the Power!" and "I'm not gonna let THE MAN tell me what to do".

A Rank 1 Psychopomp who is pretending to be a scientist might just stick to her work without socializing with coworkers. Whereas a Rank 2 Angel might be working with coworkers on a daily basis or a Rank 3 Angel might be actually someone who participates in weekly after work drinks. It really depends on how complex their mission is and what is required of them.

My concern is that Rank 3 angels are very powerful. I'd like to (if the situation needs it) have the players interact with a weaker angel without it being too mechanical or robotic. But YMMV.

I designed a Lares that is a bookshop. Don't get lost in the back stacks :-)

I really like the poor bathroom angel! Thinking it'll add some weirdness to a game I'm planning.
