  • Positive conditions from spellcasting

We have recently run into a chain of exceptional successes in our game (I think 6 happened last session!) and we are running into some trouble trying to determine what kind of positive conditions we could apply. Most all of the sample conditions/resolutions are noted for negative effects. I suppose inspired would be valid in some cases but does not typically result in a beat being awarded.

Some of the spells have be knowing/unveiling spells / a couple have been modifying the self with life or improving armor of an object with matter. While I know we can just increase the primary factor a step for free or add a reach in the primary factor free, I'm more looking for what possible things people have thought of as a list of conditions for beneficial castings.

    Any suggestions would be great.

Informed seems like a natural one for a spell gathering information. Steadfast seems fitting for a spell designed to heal or strengthen the subject.

I don't get why Inspired wouldn't result in an Arcane Beat.
Another in-book Condition could be Steadfast.

Do you feel the resolution of these should still grant an arcane beat as the exceptional success section mentions in Spellcasting? Those conditions themselves don't typically offer the reward as they tend to be the reward.

All Conditions generates Beats when resolved with the exception of beneficial conditions granted by spells that are not cast with an Exceptional Success. I really don't see why Conditions granted through the spell casting roll wouldn't give Arcane Beats when an Exceptional Success on all other actions gives beneficial Conditions that gives Beats.

Fair enough. When reading through the sample conditions, they all had N/A for beats on them (the 3 mentioned here in particular) so I would guess it just becomes a beat generation due to the exception success. Normal condition + Beat for resolution due to exceptional. Thanks, I appreciate the insight.

The "Beat:" attribute of Conditions is an optional way of gaining Beats from some Conditions. The primary way of gaining Beats through (non-Persistent) Conditions is by resolving them.

As for suggestions, page 230 has two paragraphs for improvising conditions. Simply put, a +1 or +2 bonus to further spell casting rolls when using a specific Arcanum, casting for a specific purpose, or using a specific type of Yantra could work as Conditions. 9-Again on the next relevant roll could also work. Charmed seems reasonable after an Exceptional Success on a Fate spell.

EDIT: Whoops. Missed that the thread had advanced by several posts that made this redundant. Ignore.

                    A few suggestions:

                    Runecarver
The next time your character creates runes (for example by carving, painting, or casting Invisible Runes) to be used as a Yantra, that Yantra adds +3 dice instead of the normal +2.
Possible Sources: Exceptional Success on a spell casting roll where runes were used as a Yantra.
Resolution: Your character creates runes to be used as a Yantra.

                    Fixated
Despite (or because) of an extraordinary effort your character is not yet satisfied. The next time they cast a spell to further the same purpose they gain 9-Again on that spell casting roll.
Possible Sources: Exceptional Success on a spell casting roll with a specific purpose.
Resolution: Your character casts another spell with 9-Again to achieve their goal.

                    Fervent
Your character has resonated deeply with an Arcanum and longs to cast more spells using that Arcanum. The next time they cast a spell using the same Arcanum they gain +2 on the spell casting roll.
Possible Sources: Exceptional Success on a spell casting roll using only one Arcanum.
Resolution: Casting another spell of the same Arcanum, gaining the above described bonus.

                    Yantric Grasp
A certain Yantra has led to an outstanding spell casting and the character has gained extra insight to this Yantra. The next time this Yantra is used in a spell casting roll by this character they gain one additional die.
Possible Sources: Exceptional Success on a spell casting roll using a material or environmental Yantra.
Resolution: Your character casts another spell using the Yantra described above.

                    Sympathetic Comprehension
Your character has achieved a new level of comprehension of one of their spell subjects. The next time the character casts a spell using the Sympathetic Range or Temporal Sympathy attainments with the same subject, the sympathetic Yantra retains its bonus dice as if it was used during a non-sympathetic spell casting.
Possible Sources: Exceptional Success on a spell casting roll using the Sympathetic Range or Temporal Sympathy Attainments.
Resolution: Casting another spell with the same subject while using the Sympathetic Range or Temporal Sympathy Attainments.

Wow Tessie, that's some nice stuff. Thank you.

I would guess that my trouble with this came from it somehow slipping my mind that you get beats for resolving a condition. I kept getting hung up on the resolution condition being the means to get XP and needing the pick something based on that. Those examples actually really help.

Yantraphobia - The mage is intuitively shying away from a given symbolism. Use of Yantra using that symbolism will grant one less Yantra Bonus than normal when used, even going negative.
Possible Sources: Repeated use of a competing conceptual system
Resolution: Using the Yantra in a successful spell will lead to greater insights than normal. Simple success resolves this situation and grants an two Arcane Beat.

Living Runes - The character has some sort of mystical pattern formed in their skin. This is some combination of blood vessels and coloring, usually, but however it occurred, the character's living pattern declares itself to be prepared for a higher state. This runic pattern is specific to a type of enhancement. This doesn't apply any bonus to other forms of magic, but to the proper form, it counts as a rune yantra without any need to prepare it.
Possible Sources: Spells that enhance going horribly right, Spells that degrade a pattern going horribly wrong.
Resolution: Damage that destroys the pattern through permanent damage resolves this without benefit. Spending experience to improve the attribute resolves the Condition and earns a Beat.

Incomplete Imago - The spell cast simply wasn't everything that the mage intended, Dramatic Success, notwithstanding. Recasting that same effect grants bonus spell factors equal to the lowest arcana used in the effect. These are not bonus successes. Any applied to the primary spell factor only increase the ultimate effect on success. The character has a number of rounds equal to the Primary arcana to start casting this.
                        Possible Sources: Casting something important
Resolution: The Condition automatically resolves without a beat if the character waits a number of rounds equal to the highest arcana rating used without recasting the effect. If the character makes an active choice to use the current effect or successfully casts the spell again, it resolves with an Arcane beat.

Resolute - The mage with this effect is aligned with the Supernal World as respecting one of their Obsessions which enhances their will as a consequence. When dealing with Clashes of Will that related to that Obsession, the mage automatically gains +4 bonus dice, but cannot spend Willpower to raise this.
Resolution: Makes some significant progress towards the Obsession sufficient to earn a Beat.

Unwavering - Attempts to sway the mage from one of their Obsessions just doesn't work very well. The mage counts as having three extra closed Doors to anything that would sway away from fulfilling any part of it. They treat this Obsession as a Vice for purposes of renewing Willpower.
Resolution: Being successfully prevented from or consciously choosing to refrain from fulfilling the Obsession resolves the Condition.

Need to play a while to get a feel for balancing these sorts of things, but there are some more ideas to juggle.

Only Resolute seems like a fitting Condition. Remember that they are supposed to be beneficial.

Unwavering does not work out very well. It can be milked as a source of Willpower, but Mages have the easiest time getting WP already. But the problem is that it can only grant an Arcane Beat if the character won't receive an Arcane Beat from a different source, meaning the effectively get one less Arcane Beat. I can also point out that most players doesn't seem to use Doors for their own characters.
