  • New Runes

Some of you might remember me posting a thread on making new runes for the Paths and Arcana a few years back (I also called them sigils 'cause I didn't actually know what sigils were and got too caught up in the origin of runes as divining stones; which I'm over now). Well, I decided to remake those and make some new ones for Practices and Orders:

Let me know your thoughts on them.

Like for homebrew Paths/Orders/Legacies, different versions of the same runes, or something?

Y'mean they all look uniform in design? 'Cause that was the intention behind these. Yet, they're versatile enough to be stylized in all kinds of ways. Besides, I could say the same for the official runes, and they're nonsensical on top of that.

I could; did you have something particular in mind?

If not, I came up with this: alchemical symbol of gold with arrows converging into it; symbolizing the gathering of wealth and power in pursuit of the Perfected Self.

I would love to see one for the Tremere Order (historical) possibly redacted in the modern day...

And it feels like there is another canon order missing.

Oh, what about the Exarchs? Are their Iron Seals runic?

No worries, I got them covered. Oh and Nicolas Milioni, I made the rune for the High Guild, along with some others I already made.

I feel as though there's a distinct lack of consistency in these designs, what with the inclusion of both abstract shapes and stylized images that directly depict their subject (like the one for Veiling), and that even the abstract forms don't look like they're following the same principles. The Acanthus symbol look like it's coming from a completely different design standard than the runes for Fate and Time, as though one put an Egyptian hieroglyph in the middle of some Chinese characters.

Many of them don't really look as though they'd organically follow the idea that the runes are the swirling shapes mana assumes when it is released over a subject.

I have approximate knowledge of many things.

Because I don't have any additional commentary on product itself (again, kinda generic), I figure I'd elaborate on the runes we have in the game-not because I don't think you don't know it, but I imagine a lot of other people don't-

The runes are derived from the alphabet of the magi, itself a derivative of the Hebrew alphabet constructed at some point in the 17th century (look ma, I can read a wiki). Awakening takes that and add logical floruishes to communicate what they're depicting (which is why the Company of the Codex's rune looks like a little ship, yes that's very silly) to root the feeling occultism even further into the setting, by actually engaging with a prominent feature of Western occultism.

So, like, they have a logic to how they constructed, where as the fanmade product are just....kind of straightforward, generic, and superficial.
