  • Project: Convert Icarian Bloodline (From Lancea Sanctum) to 2nd edition

how difficult would it be to convert the bloodline to 2nd edition?

any ideas how to convert their discipline?

2nd edition hasnt had a formal bloodline book yet it NEEDS one.

Yeah, Constance is just +Resolve right? Easy enough as a Bloodline specific gift. Actually kind of boring, really.

Meh, I found the "Big Book of Z Splats" kinda boring. There is interesting stuff in there, but it never gets elaborated on properly, I feel.

I actually have a note with Constance written up in the style of the physical Disciplines. I wasn't too happy about the active effects, though.

      Constance
Cost: None or 1 Willpower point per active effect
      Dice Pool: None
Action: None (for persistent effects) or Reflexive (for active effects)
Duration: Permanent (for persistent effects) or one turn (for active effects)
Like the more known physical Disciplines, Constance has two kinds of effects: persistent and active. Persistent effects are always on, and have no cost. Active effects are reflexive and cost one point of Willpower per effect.
Persistent: Add the vampire's dots in Constance to his Resolve. This may raise a character's Resolve above normal limits imposed by his Blood Potency.
      Active:
      • When spending a Willpower point to gain a bonus on a roll (included in the cost), decrease all penalties from distractions by the vampire's Constance dots.
      • When achieving at least one success on a Resolve + Composure roll add the vampire's Constance dots as extra successes.

looks fairly good forgot their discipline is the slightest bit lackluster.

its the way their written that makes them interesting.

pompous aristocrats certain their blessed by the gods.

I'd design Constance along different lines personally.

Level 1 Add the user's Contance rating to the character's effective Resolve score. (this can allow an effective ratings that exceed the normal attribute caps) furthermore, the Constance user never needs to spend willpower to contest predatory auras. (He may need to spend willpower to initiate such challeges though and willpower totals are still subject to the traditional caps.) no dice pool

Level 2 add the Constance user's rating in this discipline as an additional bonus when spending willpower points to modify a dice roll (relevant dice pool)

Level 3 add the Constance user's rating to all Clash of Wills attempts either to resist an active application of a power or to tear down a pre-existing effect. (modified to relevant dice pool)

Level 4 for the cost of a willpower point and successful Int + Resolve roll, the Constance user may opt to render themself immune to applications of any mind or emotion altering power or conditions for one hour per successful roll. (This may not be re-rolled if it is not successfully activated.)

Level 5 A Constance user may spend a number of willpower points up to half their Constance score (rounded up) on a single roll. (Yes this is a +15 to a single roll based on willpower expenditure alone.)

If I were going to make it a cheap knock off of the physical disciplines for active effects I'd probably do something more along the lines of...

For one vitae, automatically win any rolls that use Resolve as the user's dice pool in that turn. (Kind of like how celerity users automatically win initiative rolls.)
For one vitae, the user may automatically add their Resolve rating to dice pools to Lash Out against the effects other kindred's disciplines or powers.

As for the Icarian bloodline itself, I'd redesign them as a Carthian preferential bloodline who's bloodline gift allows them to regenerate willpower from actively engaging in teamwork activities.
If I were going to tie them into the Greek mythology reference, I'd make them a bit more insidious where they gain willpower by actively contributing to others' failures and don't suffer from conditions that are designed for or a direct result of failed rolls but they don't have any particular covenant preferences in the latter. And I'd retune Constance as a merit line instead based on the origins and setting use.

Here's what I did from my mechanical updates doc:

            Icarian

            Book: Lancea Sanctum
Bloodline Disciplines: Animalism, Constance, Dominate, Resilience
Bloodline Weakness: The long game played by the Dynasts’ desire for power means that they derive much less satisfaction from those small victories and reaffirmations of self that so many Kindred rely on. When they’d normally receive their full Willpower back from protecting, reinforcing, or acting on their Mask, Dirge, or Touchstone, they instead only receive half of the amount they would have gotten (round up). Single points are regained normally.

            Bloodline Gift: Constance

Constance is a new Discipline which represents the extension of the Icarians’ notorious ambition and self confidence that their blood has provided them. Their Beasts become less blatantly aggressive, taking on an almost reserved, cunning nature when not in the throes of frenzy, bolstering the willpower of the Dynast and allowing them to shrug off both mundane and supernatural manipulations leveled at them.
Cost: None or 1 Vitae per active effect
            Dice Pool: None
Action: None (for persistent effects) or Reflexive (for active effects)
Duration: Permanent (for persistent effects) or one turn (for active effects)
Like physical Disciplines, Constance has two kinds of effects: persistent and active. Persistent effects are always on, and have no cost. Active effects are Reflexive, and cost one Vitae per effect.
Persistent: Split the Vampire’s dots in Constance between their Resolve and Composure (this may only be altered when raising the Discipline). This raises their Willpower as normal, allowing more temporary willpower points to be stored, though this is still limited to 10. So long as they have more Willpower points than their maximum minus their Constance rating, they also receive a +1 bonus to their Resolve or Composure whenever it’s used to resist, withstand, contest or otherwise work against another character’s roll or ability.
Active: By spending Vitae the Icarian can flood her mind with preternatural dedication and resilience. For each point of Vitae spent choose one effect from the following list. A vampire may
spend additional Vitae to invoke multiple effects simultaneously, but no effect of Constance may be used more than once per turn.
            • When working against a social roll or a mind-affecting supernatural power that is either resisted, withstood, or contested by Resolve or Composure, the character is either given a number of bonus successes equal to their Constance rating (if contested), or the offending character loses one success on their own roll per dot of Constance (if resisted or withstood).
            • Gain a ‘phantom’ willpower point that can be used at any time in the same scene, and is spent before their actual willpower. This can go above their permanent rating, even if they already have 10 willpower. This has a tiring effect on the character, though, and may only be used a number of times per scene equal to their Constance rating.
            • Reinforce their focus, allowing an additional extended action roll to be made over the normal cap. This lasts for the duration of that roll, rather than 1 turn. As above, this can be tiring to the Kindred, and can be used only a number of times equal to the character’s Constance rating for a given attempt at an extended task. Unlike most abilities that affect extended actions, Constance CAN provide this benefit to Blood Sorcery rolls.

This is not a limitation in second edition.

"dot — The incremental measurement of a permanent
trait. Most traits range from 1 to 5 dots, but some (such as
Willpower) range from 1 to 10, and others (Health) can go
                higher."

From the core glossary. It also talks about Ephemeral entities,a t least, having a maximum of 10 Willpower later in the book. I think it's hidden a few other places too, just never in the actual Willpower sections...

Willpower only usually has a range of 1-10 because of the fact humans can only get an attribute up to five dots, and willpower is made up of Resolve+Composure. More powerful supernatural creatures (6+ Supernatural Tolerance) can have higher willpower ranges because of their ability to get more than five dots in an attribute. Only ephemeral entities have a specific 1-10 limit beyond how many attribute dots they can buy.

I had forgotten that it was specified in the glossary of a single book. Even so it only applies to that gameline (i.e. humans) since it's not in any of the other gamelines' core books.
