  • Ask a Simple Question: Vampire

As per Ian’s advice, I’m creating a similar thread as to the now closed ask a simple question thread.

What page and book has the rules for Averting One's Eyes from things like Dominate during combat?

  • #2
Hmm, I don't think any book has that Action listed specifically.

You might want to just wholly reframe Mesmerize's contested dice roll as the vampire trying to meet the enemy's eye versus the enemy trying to avoid it.

During combat? The Blinded Tilt (partial/one-eye version). Have fun fighting someone without looking at them.

Where in the corebook is the rough estimate ratio of Vamp:Humies ?

I'm thinking on working on a Chronicle within my region and I thus need some estimate of the potential numbers since fewer vampires would mean fewer covenants and all.

I remember the 1e corebook having something on the subject, i would imagine 2e simply keeping it out of convenience for STs wanting a reference jumping point to start and tweak from.

VtR 1e Core talks about it on page 24 in the 'The Body Count' section. IIRC VtR 2e doesn't mention specific ratios as it leans more toward a 'as many as you need to support the type of stories you want to tell' approach.

              Thanks a lot !

I think I'll go with something like boosted 1:50 000, since the whole metorpolitan area is home to 800K peoples, so I could have twenty or so vampires, which is more than enough really.

I have gone as to conceive my chronicle's version of Rio de Janeiro as a city with possibly around 300-500 undead, but then we are talking of an urban center 6-9+ million people depending if one counts city proper or metropolitan area. Plus, i wanted to drive home a sense of a barely contained seething cauldron of hidden monsters that the night court barely controlled, supposing the Prince and its ilk even have a good grasp of their numbers, territories and activities (no, they didn't).

Only about 50-60 were actually written out and i'm the first to admit a bunch were riffs on NPCs from the Core, Covenantbooks or characters from VtM: Bloodlines with some random ideas or nods to brazilian history & folklore mixed in.

(Though some end up distinctly different - Rodrigo Nunes as a mulato streetcar driver & capoeirista made Toreador in the '30s is almost unrecognizable in relation to Nines from the game except for his name and Carthian allegiance)

What kind of event may lead to the - official - wipe out of two Covenants in a City ?

My campaign will focus only on Ordo Dracul and Carthians in the region of Toulouse and I need to find an explanation for the absence of the Invictus and Lancea et Sanctum (Circle is absent since neo-paganism is very weak in France anyway but especially around here).

I thought about using the events of WWII being abused by those Covenants only to blow up in their faces + influx of Spanish Carthians during the Retirada to explain it but I'm lacking on the actual vampiric reasoning and all...

They might have been kicked out when city government changed, maybe the Strix decided they needed to go, maybe they got into a fight with some other creature and got wiped out or perhaps they just weren’t able to get a foothold in the city.
If the city recently got depopulated of vampires maybe those are the only two covenants who have tried to settle it again.

That is very much of a 'whatever you need to have happened in order to work the story you and your players want to tell' question which could obviously have many valid answers. I am currently working up a City where the Lancea et Sanctum and Circle are very weak (but not absent) in the aftermath of them getting into a dispute that turned to blood in the streets when their leaders lost control of the situation. The other Covenants are expanding to fill the vacuum but the Ordo are particularly strong in part because they were the one who stepped in and put an end to the fighting.

As others pointed out, it all depends on what you want to set up and how much of the secret & not so secret history of the city you want to flesh out. It could be that the influx of spanish and italians leaving their fascism infested countries in the 1920s & 1930s upended definitely a status quo already decadent and fragile since Voltaire's infamous accusations exposed its parliament and city institutions as backward relics even by pre-enlightnement standards.

Or were the wave of algerian repatriates alonside the extensive urban reforms of the "balancing metropolis" project in the 60s that really kickstarted things?

Supposing that some vengeful cathar didn't rise from the grave for a bout of sanctified payback of biblical proportions, that is.
