  • Good names for Packs

So I need a good name for NPC pack I run - and could not found similar topic for general advises on naming those groups. Any advise or list or generator for naming packs will be looked for - as open question of whole topic.

The group I look name in particular for is Scandinavian Bone Shadows group that is guarding Temple at Uppsala, for it's lore and sacred place, at the start of Vikings Era in year 800 A.D. For now, I have prepared those pack members:
    • Bjarni Death Skull - old Ithaeur and alpha of the pack, one of older priests in Temple.
    • Brother Asmund - Wolf-Blooded - middle aged priest in the temple, expert about Norse myths and legends.
    • There are also enigmatic women and men I did not named yet - probably Elodoth and Rahu, respectively. Women, probably, is from Valkyrie Mot also.

General advice? Look toward band names (in this case, metal bands), and change a few things from there.

Malkydel: "And the Machine dictated; let there be adequate illumination."
Yossarian: "And lo, it was optimal."

Another suggestion is to look at the names of street gangs as they can serve as inspiration.

The Golden Chain seems like an obvious one, given the gold chain wrapped around the place. You could fancify it by calling them the Shackled of Helios or something.

You could just call them the Wolves of Uppsala.
Another thought, Odin was served by two ravens and two wolves, maybe name them after one of those wolves.

            The Society of Claws?

Look up Everchanging Book of Names. It's a random name generator software program.

              Street Stalkers
Totem: the Cat that prowls on the Streets

              Guardians of the Caves
Totem: the Cat that prowls on the Paths

Its the same pack but their totem upgraded later on the campaign (ate a powerful eagle spirit) as they moved in a more primal territory.

My general approach to something like this is to look at:
                 - What is the pack's communal agenda?
                 - What does the pack believe?
                - What is the pack known for?
                - What is the pack's totem?
                 - What do regional Uratha politics prioritise?
and then weld together a name symbolically linked to one or more of those.

I'd look at something straightforward and clearly stating their existence like the Temple Guard, something linked to the shrine like nofather 's suggestion of the Golden Chain (which is probably what I'd end up going with), or something indicating a claim of historical descent and legitimacy like 'Freyr's Children'.

Watching over Temple and secret lore and Fetishes in it, sounds good?

They are Norse Bone Shadows Temple piests - so I think in Spirits and in Norse Gods...

Do not have one for time being. As I like to start with Animals for Totems, maybe some variant of Crow or Owl? Choosing Norse Gods patron as Totem is outside of Dark Eras canon for Wolf & Raven Era...

It's literally the second of three Forsaken packs in nearby of Uppsala. Other two are PCs mix pack of Vikings ( 'Blood for Odin' ) and Hunters in Darkness pack that was just slaughtered by Idigam and it's spawn. So no 'Uratha politics in region', for time being.

'Temple Guard' can be too direct - especially, as they are more priests than warriors.

'Freyr's Children' would be too limited as Uppsala Temple was sacred for not one, but three Norse gods - Odin, Freyr and Thor, three worshiped at once. So 'Odin's, Freyr's and Thor's Children' maybe to much on the noose and long to prenouncate.

And about 'Golden Chain' - What is all about? I cannot recall anything related to Norse myths connected to Gold and Chains at once...

How about the "Blot Pack"? That's fairly short and would connect you to the main important activity at the temple.

Or perhaps "Kvasir's Blood"? Seeing as they seem like intellectually talented people..

                        Verð Viskunnar

It's (probably very bad) Icelandic for "the price of wisdom"

What is tolerance? It is the consequence of humanity. We are all formed of frailty and error; let us pardon reciprocally each other's folly. That is the first law of nature.

Your wikipedia link mentions the temple being surrounded by a golden chain. ''Adam writes that a golden chain surrounds the temple that hangs from the gables of the building. The chain is very visible to those approaching the temple from a distance due to the landscape where the temple was built; it is surrounded by hills, "like an amphitheatre."'

                          It's even in the picture.

So, Hirfathra Hissu that makes fetishes... That's all there's to the pack in question?

I'd go with Golden Chain too. If you want some mythological resonance for it, Wyrd, there's some space to work with the golden necklace Brisingamen, which belonged to Freyja. Considering she and Frey were brother and sister, loved each other and, she was at the same time a goddess of love, fertility and war, I think there are worse examples of heritage for a pack in this context.

                              (Frejya is cool)
