  • Doing First Tongue Translations

Long story short: I am the author of the original First Tongue Dictionary posted on the old White Wolf Forums. If you want to see the archived versions of versions 1.0 and 2.0 of that dictionary:

Collected Compendium Courtesy of Litheon: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1...-844XrYK7kfePo

And here is a handy spreadsheet made by our very own nikink that provides Grimmified Sumerian to create words from: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets...HjcEkfi-rspTyE

I will be resurrecting and posting the newest dictionary here. Please post any requests below for translations so that I can add them to the dictionary. You may also post translation requests for your game.

What context are you looking for the swear to be in? The f-word has many uses (and so do its derivatives); I can kill two birds with one stone by making multiple translations if you have ideas on what definitions of that word you want translated.

'Sup Koro? Hoped your guys have been enjoying the dictionary.

            Let's see....

Mother****er: If you are Pure, it's Uzuhamukask, which is a particularly foul insult as it implies you're equivalent to one of Luna's steaming piles of poop left on the doorstep — Predator Kings throw it around frequently, Silver Fangs absolutely lose their heads if you use it in their presence, and the Fire-Touched just sigh and add it to the list of your sins. Rarely heard around Forsaken, but when it is, it's quite blasphemous and even worse that a certain, female-oriented c-word in English. A milder (but still very inappropriate) version used is Amukask, which doesn't carry the Lunar connontations.

Son of a B****: Again, if you're among the Pure, the equivalent is Uzuhdur, which is fairly harsh. The term "bitch" by itself doesn't carry many negative connotations, for obvious reasons — that being said, one term is kliatamadur, which means roughly "son of the lowly mother". Kliatama is a not-so-nice word for a female that will sleep around to gain favours, rank and status, referring to the fact she became/will become a mother because she has to use her body in order to keep her place in the pack. Females that haven't had children from these affairs yet are known as kliat murruf, which roughly means "lowly reproductive organs". A cruder term for this is murrusuuf nidu, or just murrusuuf, the latter of which can refer to both males and females who engage in these activities.

Knights of Saint Adrian: This would translate to Angzermedlu, which is very close in etymology to Angzermusim, the name for Angels of the God-Machine (Angii-Thilikh).

Fang-Shapers: For these, I created Kukthidum, which means "fang-shaping pack" or "fang-creating pack".

              2. To fight honorably or to fight dishonorably

Oh wow! Welcome back to translation land!

I personally would like to request some sort of first tongue translation of "one day we shall meet again" either in friendly connotation such as between parting pack or packmates, or in a connotation insinuating next time there shall be blood and/or death.

Who were you on the old forums, Dessembrae? Your avvie seems familiar....

Ooh, some good requests here! Let's see:

Soulless: A soulless person, i.e. one who seems to have no sense of morality or conscience, may be called a viruhursakh (which is particularly harsh or strong to use, as it implies you're heartless because of Soulless Wolf, a.k.a. Viruhk-Ur), or more plainly, nuhursakh ("no-heart"). The latter term can also refer to someone who has become soulless in the context of losing their soul; while we already know zi'ir is used for Morality 0 werewolves, a similar term is used for those who have experienced soul loss — zi'rih, "spirit-eaten". Though the term often refers to those turned into hollowed shells by hosts and other spirits, it can refer to anyone who has lost their soul. Zi'irs who became zi'irs due to the Soul Loss condition of GMC are sometimes called rih-galer zi'ir (or just rih-galer), "Broken Souls damned by being eaten". Horrifying in its context, as the thought of a wolf losing their minds because their soul was snatched is much like how a spirit is absorbed into another spirit by being eaten — they lose themselves, sometimes quickly and sometimes slowly.

To Fight: In the old dictionary, I didn't really give a word for "fight", but I gave specific terms for different kinds of fighting, reflecting how the Uratha have several words for types of fighting due to their culture. The word for "challenge", habalthu, was meant to be used in my translations to refer to fighting most of the time, reflecting how most "fights" between wolves are challenges for dominance. Ergo, to fight honourably would likely depend on the tribe you're part of; for example, all wolves would probably use the term Urfarah habalthudu, which means "to fight like Father Wolf himself", as a major compliment to an honourable fighter. Tribes individually may use the names of their totems to refer to what they consider honourable fighting, i.e. Fenris habalthudu for a skillful Blood Talon warrior, Kamduis habalthu for a Bone Shadow who always gives the spirit a fair shot, and so on. On the other hand, dirty fighting might be known to the Forsaken as Anshega habalthudu, which means "you fight like the Pure" — not very flattering for a werewolf of Luna's. The opposite of this, for the Pure, is obviously Urdaga habalthudu, Some may use gurim habalthudu, meaning "you fight like a sick animal", the lowercase voiced around Fire-Touched by pronouncing the "gur" as a guttural growl to take a swipe at their totem. Pure instead use Uzuhabalthudu, which is a lot stronger-sounding a term of the Uratha, and is meant to clearly identify them in a conversation as children of the traitorous Bitch Moon. The worst of dirty fighters — those who give unnecessarily painful deaths or compromise their packs and others — may get slapped with viruhabalthu, which means "your fighting is inherently corrupted and filthy". A worse version of this is Maelhabalthu, which not only refers to the dirty fighting tactics of the Bale Hounds, but also those who go to extremely foul lengths to win a fight, to the point of consorting with Wound-spawn and foul hosts.

Heroic and Villainous: Heroic would be kalekal-zi, "one of a renowned soul"; the greatest of heroes are made distinct in this term by having no hypen between "kalekal" and "zi", meaning "one who is inherently renown". Villains are known as zi'ira (original term by Mr. Shopping of Detroit Rock City fame), which means "close to being broken-souled, foul, dishonourable or of low morality".

One Day We Shall Meet Again: Friendly version? "Kin ah kana kalsufala guth Iduth." — "There will be a time to meet when the Moon turns well," meaning that the parties will meet by the mercy of Mother Moon. Hostile version? "Ku sahfa Suth-Iduth su-ah hiri'us nuku." — "I promise I find you under a Bloodied Luna," or, "I swear I will find you under a bloody moon." Get rid of the "sahfa" part if you're not hell-bent on revenge or otherwise furious.

Edit: Almost forgot — if you're Pure, the friendly version is, "Ku nuku kin ina nuduth ah," which means, "We will meet in moonless times." This refers to meeting in a place where there is no trace of Luna or her servants, such as the hated Forsaken.

What does "Tie Lin" mean, if I might ask? It looks like a Chinese name.

                      As for the term chimera:

Suasumthurah: Chimera, the mythical Greek beast, and also referring to the patron of the Stargazers.

sharsusar: Chimera, unnatural hybrid; animera and humera (as described in Skinchangers) are called hidumamu-sharsusar and lu'u-sharsusar, respectively. Something interesting to note here is the mashup nature of the term hidumamu itself — we have hidumam, a rare word in First Tongue in that it is the distinct plural of another word (hidum, meaning "animal"), combined with the -u suffix that often denotes a type of host (az, "spider", "poisonous vermin" compared to Azlu, "spider host", for example). Therefore, "an unnatural hybrid host to animals". And yet, the term for a humera is rather straightforward — then again, if you pronounced that final u with emphasis, you could also get a word that means "an unnatural hybrid host to a human", in a case where the suffixed form and the original form are only differentiated by pronunciation.

Tie Lin (Iron Scales): Three versions depending on what the name is supposed to mean or imply. Ansarmusinhirigus if he literally has a body of iron scales, Ansar-Musinhirigus if an iron-scaled form is part of what he is, and Ansar Musinhirigus if he has some sort of iron scale or something representing iron scales, such as scale armour.

Li'imikhi if a fundamental part of him is to literally have a thousand faces; Li'im-Ikhi if a thousand faces are a feature of his; Li'im Ikhi if the thousand faces are more "a thousand guises", or if he's known to be called that because he has a thousand faces he can change into.
