  • Tha'hon, The Deep (2E)

Water fell away from it as it lifted its head into the unfamiliar air. Eyes that were used to the bl ackness swiveled, re-focused to take in the cold light. Pallid, slick skin swelled outward, and plates of organic not-bone ground against one another. Rows of teeth parted from one another, and a rush of the unfamiliar air flooded into long-disused lungs. Yes. This felt — different, but somehow, dimly remembered. It had done this before, and it still bore the scars from the strongest things it had hunted and killed. It was time to do it again.

The Deep has not felt the touch of sunlight or moonlight for millennia, but it has not rested. It has slipped through pitch-black waters at the coldest and furthest reaches of the oceans, feeding its bulk on the lesser creatures that also survive there.

The Deep is neither vertebrate nor invertebrate; it seems to be a blasphemous hybrid of both. Where it is not protected by plates of armor that seem to be part chitin and part coral, it has the pale and unwholesome flesh of an invertebrate or a drowned man. Fat, writhing arms like swollen eels end in rasps reminiscent of a lamprey’s mouth, and chitinous limbs sprout oddly fanned fins. Its “face” is mercifully hidden in shadow, below a prow-like extrusion of armor — but what can be seen is a hateful mishmash of unusual mouthparts and stunted sensory organs.

No werewolves have penetrated to the lightless reaches of the ocean where the Deep swims, and no Uratha can attest to what its form is like when it passes through its icy grottoes. Whatever its form may be in the depths, it alters horribly as the Deep enters shallower water and even open air. Its body, no longer constrained by the high pressure to which it is accustomed, bloats outward — it is as if its body knows that by rights it should explode, but cannot. It is not graceful on land, but neither is it helpless there. The Tha’hon can move its bulk with surprising speed, smashing into its surface prey before tearing them apart and devouring them.

    Notes
Colossus: The Deep uses Stamina in place of Resistance.

Elemental Fury: The Deep has Influence (Floods) 5, and rolls Stamina + Survival to use it.

Numina: The Deep rolls Strength + Occult for Drain, and Presence + Intimidation for Emotional Aura.

Regeneration: The Deep regains either one level of lethal damage or two levels of bashing damage each turn as a reflexive action. Lethal damage takes priority, and Aggravated damage is healed at the rate of one level per day. This regeneration is possible only while the creature is at least 50 percent immersed in water.

Swift: The Deep may only use this Dread Power while at least 50 percent immersed in water.

A conversion of Tha'hon (from the Predators supplement) using the Horror creation rules from the CofD Core as a basis. On a related note, I'm going with the Drowned God storyline for it, and will probably do a Sundered World write-up for it at a later date.

For more information on the creature, see pp. 175 to 178 of the aforementioned suppplement.

The Sundered World: The Land of the Drowned God

It may have been in the distant past, but Tha’hon was once beautiful. It drew on the power and majesty of both land and sea, of human and beast. It was king over its own civilization. Yet in time, this divine being would find itself cast deep into the ocean. It would lay hidden there, unseen by all for thousands of years.

Before that, though, when Flesh and Spirit were still united by the Border Marches, the Drowned God was one of its gods, a Pangaean tied to the primeval waters. Patron to a tribe of humans who lived on an island on the waters south of the Land, it reigned over one of the few cities of that era, sustaining its existence through prayer and offerings. Few traders from the Peope, if any, ever make it to its domain. And stories of the Drowned God that reach their villages vary on what they claim it is. Some say it was none other than Sea, a Pangaean which once tried to flood the world to make it his. Others describe Tha'hon as one of its spawn, an offspring of the greater divinity as the Firstborn are to the God of Wolves.

Regardless of whatever truth was accepted, all tales agree that Tha'hon was a mighty being. The power invested by its faithful allowed it to fend off spirits and fellow gods that sought to depose it from its rule. A few even whisper that it held its own against Urfarah and the First Pack, though such a deed could not have come without great cost. Indeed, to ensure its survival, the Drowned God gathered an assortment of otherworldly vassals around itself - spirits resonant toward it, Wise from its mortal subjects, and even Uratha who defy both Great Predator and Warden Moon with their service to the god. These servants helped cement its rule over the island and its surrounding waters, and similarly tame the local Marches and Shadow.

Yet the Drowned God was not invincible. And as the Sundering looms on the horizon, the seeds of its downfall begin to be sown. Some of the Wise under its patronage conspire to steal its power, influenced by rumors that their counterparts among the People are turning against their own pantheon. Meanwhile, packs of werewolves gather across the sea, intent on declaring a Sacred Hunt against the Pangaean and finally end its reign for good.

Whether by the magic of its Wise, the teeth and claws of werewolves, or even the shockwaves of Urfarah's death, the outcome is the same. Tha'hon's city will fall, and the Pangean itself will be trapped in the World of Flesh where it slowly but surely weakens in power until it is naught but a shadow of its former glory.

Finally added a Neolithic write-up for Tha'hon as a Pangaean, with a small shout-out to the Malta entry from the Pack supplement. I'm still missing a Ban for the Drowned God, though, so any suggestions for it are welcome.

P.S: Arcanist. this may be relevant for your Sundered World Chronicles. LostLight, mentioning you since I referenced the Neolithic tidbit for the Nibiru with regards to Sea.

Deionscribe , you could write short sum up in opening post? It's nice 'monster' but when I first come to topic, I did not know anything about what it it.

                  Brilliant Work!

Do you have any notes or design considerations for updating the other Primordial Horrors from Predators?

Generally okay, but even making first statement like 'Presenting monter from Predators updated as Pangean god' or something like that. Werewolf monster manuals are much less popular than Legacies.

Noted. But I kinda like a good number of the Werewolf supplements They're full of stuff I'd like to convert into 2E.

Well, I am trying to work on a conversion for the Nuigim And I'm almost done with giving it stats. As to what origins to tag it with, I'm not sure whether I should go with "Beast Out of Darkness" or "Hunting Hound", or even whether or not I should come up with a different possible origin. Sundered World does give some points to justify the first two options, though. For Option A, it's the fact that Pangaea is home to creatures that are beyond classification and come into being from the nature of the realm. For Option B, it could just as easily have been made by any of the following besides a spirit - a Pangaean, or a Wise one. Heck, it might have even been affected by proximity to a Scar from the Time Before for all we know.
