  • Stranger Things series as Shadow Realm story

Note: This topic is, of course, one big TV series spoiler. If you did not watched new Netflix series yet, just go and see it yourself - you will thank me later.

    And from now on...

To me whole concept of 'Upside Down' looks very much as more gloom Shadow Realm. The only real difference is that it's very... empty. Like the Monster is only real dweller of it. Maybe it's just local weirdness of Hawkins town. Just see those.

As we are at him - I think that Monster is some kind of Host - it explains fungal changes near the places he has 'breached' the Gauntlet, literally tearing it for few seconds. It also explains the finale of seasons... Look at him - he could have been sometime before poor man overridden by this shartha.

What even more awesome, kids in the series are refer 'Upside Down' as Vale of Shadows from their D&D books. They even quote it's description in episode:

"Shadows cling to the walls of the canyon, even in the brightest day, and some of the shadows walk, carrying their burden of hatred and hunger with them. Beware this place."

I agree on all these points The Upside-Down definitely made me think of the Shadow whenever I saw it.

As for the creature itself, I'm torn between it being a shartha or one of the Claimed. Or it could even be some sort of Pangaean Horror along the lines of the creatures found in the third chapter of Predators. If he is one of the former, he certainly wouldn't be an Usudwirku (Fungal Host from Night Horrors: Wolfsbane). Or maybe he could be, and it might be along the lines of the Azarath and other humanoid types of Hosts.

Considering the ending, I'm leaning towards
a Host... and it's infected Will.

I myself was thinking along the lines of a wound but I can see a host being a better idea

I loved the depiction of the Upside Down. Right down to the toxic air environmental tilt. It sent me searching through the W:tF books for comparable crunch to add to the hisil. I'm currently utilizing two shoals, and one that is on the verge of becoming wound. I plan on adding a tilt for places where the gauntlet has become too thick as a result of Azlu or other forces. Here is what I have so far. Italics are the Hisil description of the same place.

172 Shepard Avenue feels wrong, like the cardboard backdrop of the old hollywood movies. The place feels hollow, lifeless. You can see the grass beginning to die. The place is real to the touch, but it makes your spine stand on end. It is obvious you are not the only one that feels this way, because people tend to slow down walking past it.

Tilt: Every point of Willpower spent only adds 1 additional die, and no willpower can be regained while in this place.

Thick webs cover the structure, making it only barely visible through the gauzy white silk. The shape remains true though. The doors are two dark tunnels encircled by spider silk. You can see movement in the silk walls as you approach. Small black dots disappearing before you can get near.

Tilt: While in 127 Shepard Avenue, all characters suffer the leg wrack tilt.

Now with Season 2 I can clearly say that Stranger Things 2 sold to me idea of Idigam as Werewolf: the Forsaken 2E main antagonist!

The vines and Demogorgon are part of the same alien parasite that clears Shadow Realm/Upside Down, spreading in it. If we assume that parasite is Coalescenced Idigam - it all makes sense! We even have Spawns and Herald of it in Season 2, like each good Idigam has!

It's quite a specific resonance of the shadow; mind. Not that I could put my finger on it.

At the end of season 2 we even have ANOTHER reason why Stranger Things is great Shadow Realm + Idigam story -

We see a good honest Exorcisms to break Possession Condition, with using Coalesed Idigam's Bane!
