  • Aberrant Interview Coming on The Story Told - Questions Needed

    Hello,

We're going to have the opportunity to interview Steve Kenson and Ian Watson in their role as developers on Aberrant. We'll be releasing the interview sometime during the upcoming Kickstarter campaign. As usual, we'd like to open the floor to listener questions. The focus of the interview is going to be the development and implementation of Aberrant. I can't promise we'll get to all your questions, but please add them here for anything you want to ask Ian ans Steve. We're holding the interview on 6/26, so we'll need all questions by 6/25. Thank you.

Mega attributes and enhancements were a big deal in 1e. The system for them was borked, but I think the themes and powers involved are important to the game. Will those things be somehow represented in 2e and what can you tell us about them?

The presentation of the Teragen was inconsistent in 1e. Sometimes they were a cadre of visionaries and lunatics. Sometimes they were moustache twirling villains. Sometimes they were “the real good guys.” What can you tell us about how they’ll be presented in this new edition?

I never liked the Aberrants in 1e. They were fractious and most of their characters were... kind of annoying. Are they gonna get a spruce up?

Elites don’t make the slightest lick of sense in 1e. In a realistic world, the corporations that tried that insanity would be ground under the heel of every military ever. How are Elites going to work this time?

Sterilization conspiracy. How is this gonna work? A mega intelligent nova should suss that out in seconds. Is it being removed? Changed?

Is Project Proteus going to exist? Will they no longer be objective villains?

      Re:Questions

Jetstream covered most of my questions, but wanted to add -

      - What is changing and what is being kept about some of the lesser factions in the world (Church of Astaroth, Camparelli-Zukhov MegaSyndicate, XWF, etc)

The Artificer's Workshop - A collection of Exalted Artifacts
Curios, Relics, and Tomes - A collection of Relics (Cursed and Otherwise)
The Horror Lab - A collection of Beasts, Monsters and less definable things.
Strange Places - A collection of Dark, Mysterious, and Wondrous Locations
Twilight Menagerie - A collection of Ephemeral Entities

Leif Jones' artwork was iconic for the setting. Will he be featured in the new book?

-Speaking of military and elites, will we see more details about the larger nations' military nova teams (Column Shiva, EHM, America's unnamed nova ops , etc...)

-Taint mechanics; Is it still hard to gain and next to impossible to lose without massive downtime?

-Obviously people will want to know about a coherent invention/gadgeteering system.

-Any possibility they might load all the powers into a single book rather than spread them out among splatbooks?

-Any changes to Directive member nations or structure? Seemed like the original members were rather haphazard, and missing some key intelligence game players.

There were some characterisation of Slider, what never happened on 1e. Are there a plan to start the official chronology by her death and scape of Corbin (if it happens) or the plan is to leave it a little more opened?

I had the feeling that Aeon is a little more open for when to start the story than it used to be on 1e, so I believe Aberrant would follow the same idea. I mean, Trinity 1e didn't have QK and Teleporters on the core rule, and now there are a few pages just on how to play a QK, and when it would be better to start with them.

The original Aberrant reflects being written in an era when international liberalism was in ascendence after the end of the Cold War, and that trend took the brunt of the game’s satire/skepticism/deconstruction. Today international liberalism is collapsing before a tide of “populist” neo-nationalism. How does the setting change to stay relevant in that context?

Building on that, what motivates them without the sterilization conspiracy?

You say that like mercenary contractors and private security companies don’t actually exist

Military contractors and private security don’t have that amount of army shattering power.

But if Novas existed, they obviously would since it’s not like governments are going to be able draft novas against their will. and the private sector will always be able to offer more perks. We don’t let private contractors control nukes in reality, but in reality the nukes can’t walk away on their own and decide they’d like to work for more money and luxuries and there’s nothing you can do about it.

But more word count on patriotic Novas who do choose to serve their governments rather than Utopia to counter Elites would be a definite plus this edition!

Well, not necessarily patriotic, but novas working for their governments would generally be looking beyond themselves and feel that throwing in with their government would best address what they wanted to do, or that they wanted to address issues in their government.
