  • So, according to the Setting Secrets preview, Aether is essentially an unintended byproduct of the Martian/Ascendancy Dimension Tunneling, which results in a massive churn of "waste" probabilities, a sort of "tainted" Flux. After the Martians are defeated and their remaining Dimension Tunnel machines destroyed and/or confiscated, the massive swell of Aether ceases to exist, and shortly thereafter, the Age of Aether goes with it.

The canonical assumption is that the Unwinders, backed by entrenched interests, essentially win, forcibly unwinding and then suppressing through propaganda and subterfuge all of the Aetheric events, making them forgotten or considered fiction. Making new Aetheric devices or new Aethernauts becomes impossible, but some Magogs still remain. The few remaining Magogs, Martians, and Devices continue to exist and mildly influence events.

    • The small thing that really stood out to me was that Nikola Tesla discovered that he was transformed into "something more", which presumably continues to the Adventure! timeframe.

Is there anything in the Adventure! manuscript that references what Tesla became? If he is some Inspired, everyone would assume that he is an Inspired of the Telluric era, rather than a holdover from the Aether era.

Tesla was hinted to be a super-science Daredevil in Adventure 1E - in the reporter's section of that he built a gate to somewhere and some thing was hinted to come through.

I don't think he was mentioned in 2E, but I've only glanced over the manuscript (I'm waiting for the full release to read it).

Possibly. There's a line on p.300 of the manuscript mentioning that as a skilled dimensional traveler, he can't help but to weaken dimensional barriers around him. P.293 mentions that as more people visited the dimensional anomalies he discovered, the anomalies either faded away or people couldn't see the slight differentation between this dimension and one close by that's bleeding through. Taken together, his powers would seem to be related to dimensional travel and perception.

          • Tesla is mentioned in TC:Adventure! as being the world's foremost expert on Strange Places — which are explicitly not a result of the Hammersmith incident. With the reveals in TC:Æther, it's obvious that they're holdovers from that era. That, in turn, implies that the disappearance of the wonders of Æther isn't quite as abrupt as it might at first sound.

This makes me wonder a "far from home" campaign centered on an Aether/Adventure era setting that was stranded in a distant realm. Trying to get back home, fighting locals, dimension hopping etc.

Kind of. But I am talking about a whole setting. Not just a group of characters. With factions, weird tech and more meat to chew on.

But of course, settings like that become a "dimension of the week" storyline. So there are challenges.

Perhaps a handful of allies pocket dimensions with a more or less stable route between them. A set of hostile dimensions, unexplored ones etc.

                  Spit balling here.

                    • The antagonists section of the manuscript indicates Martians can swap Entanglements (but not Snares) between sessions if given a few scenes of privacy and seclusion. Speculation on this mechanic:

1). Since Martians prefer using their version of Q-Tech to cultivating their intrinsic powers, they may have implanted modular devices and use the downtime to swap to new modules.

2). Since Martians have possessed their powers for generations, they may have had time to develop a faster but more limited variant of the Chrysalis Edge.

                      Opinions?

                      • I like both options, really prefer the second for explaining why they change powers as they prefer. The first would explain the changes in their equipment if you consider their equipment as the source of their powers (most cases yes), but the second explain it all better.

The idea of a easier Chysalis also helps to explain what they do to control their excess flux when getting out of hand. It’s probably easier to them to do so since their dna reacts better to quantum and creates more stable mutations, that can even be passed down to their descendants.
