Reading over "the Wretched," which are just awesome, am I right in reading their type is "Undead" and therefore can't be healed with spells like Cure Wounds? Do they only heal from spending hit die?
That is correct. They're undead. Any magic that specifically heals undead — or more to the point doesn't specifically exclude undead — heals them. Cure wounds does not. Vampiric touch however...
