  • Worth noting is that the Silver Ladder have this as an acknowledged part of their culture - the Silver Ladder 1e book talks about how "retiree" Masters who are of low Status and kept busy with trivial jobs aren't too uncommon. Being a Deacon is stressful, and sometimes it's a relief to just leave it all behind....

  • “Aaah, my apologies Neokoros. I suppose I was aware that you had graduated, it simply slipped my mind. Your Soriology focus… that is Magosophy, correct? I will admit, the Hierophant has tried to explain the fields to me several times, but I rarely seem to retain the information.“

He smiles brightly at the complement, looking up at the ceiling’s swirling patterns. “Do you think so? It was a pleasant project Piper and I spent several months perfecting. We have been trying to work out a similar style using constellations on the second floor. The arguments over which phases...

  • FBI! Open up! (NSA, open up?)

More seriously, the FC has a bit of a grab-bag feel to them. Where the other Orders mostly focus on the invocation of somewhat ridged themes (simplified to Secrecy, Knowledge, Order, and Oaths/Violence), the FC focuses on "Innovation". That can mean Innovation in the inventive sense, using technology, but it can also be invoked on ideas that differ from the current "mainstream". The latest smartphone is just as valid as an obscure musical style....

  • As long as the caster got an Exceptional Success, then yes, the Conditions can indeed be resolved for Beats. That all parses correctly to me.

Of note, since I think this is related to your other thread, things like this are an acknowledged part of the game design. The "The Beat Goes On" sidebar on page 126 touches on it....

  • I personally would rule that it does "float" in midair, assuming it didn't have enough force to pass through whatever it hit. That would also mean Sleepers watching it would Dissonance it very quickly.

Yeeeeees... I think that parses right. Nope, nvm, go with what Hermit said. Also important to note is that you can only Resolve one Condition per scene, which may limit the "endless Beats" utility a tiny bit....

  • [ spoiler] blah blah blah[ /spoiler]. Delete the space between the first brackets and the "s" and "/" respectively. Similarly, you can Bold words ([ b][ /b]), italicize ([ i][ /i]) and underline ([ i][ /i]) the same way.

That... sounds more like you want a Mystery Cult or a Nameless Order than a Legacy. Legacies can have elements of that, but aside from a few like the Daksha -which have gone out of their way to basically be a splinter-faction in the Mysterium- I usually interpret Legacies as being a focusing lens by which a Mage refines their normal behaviors....

  • The Orders are allies, but even the closest allies have things they keep from each other.the Pentacle functions together for survival more than anything else.

Which ultimately means that without giving you access to Order Tools, Rote Skills, and/or Order Merits, then the one dot of status is objectively pointless, given you can take an unlimited volume of Allies (X Order) dots, so long as there are Orders to befriend....

  • Tangentially related:
You can gain one dot of Status with at most one Order besides your own. The Ally Merit would cover most social interactions, so does that mean the Status qualifies you for that order's Rote Skills and Order Tools? I house rule that it gives you access to the Order-specific merits, but I know that isn't a universal opinion and without those it seems kinda pointless. I think a 5-dot Masque can emulate Order-specific traits, but that's a bit of an edge case.
Similarly, can a Pentacle Mage progress higher than one dot in a Nameless Order Mystery Cult, or is it...

  • Heh, I was actually asking because I think it makes a good plot-point for a Mage game. Liches aren't usually seen as a good thing, self-harm to achieve Lichdom is bad, and relying on the gifts of the Hedge to achieve it is worse. If the Heirarch never seems to get older, but doesn't have active magic keeping them that way, people'll start asking questions.

I'll admit to being quite uninformed on Werewolf and Giest, but aren't both functionally unaging? I though Werewolves aged like sharks, and Giests were age-locked to when they take their bargain....

  • It would be possible, but likely difficult to become a Hierophant. Up to that point you can probably get away with playing politics and finding someone to kiss up to. But without a body of work as a resume most orthodox Heirophants won't want to promote you, and the person you're sucking up to probably won't want to lose their toady unless they're getting "promoted" to Hierophant Superior themselves.

Egregore, I'm less sure of. There's an element of "this is how you do the thing" in all of the Order merits, but the key to their use seems to be the integration of...

  • 1. Different areas have different behaviors. The Company is unusual -and is more like an Arrow Free Company- but hardly impossible. Nothing wrong with ignoring it if you don't like it, but it's a good way to show how the Orders are far less homogeneous than they like to claim.

    2. So, the big thing to remember with the Orders is that membership is one of acknowledgement. If you know a bit about Free Masons, think of it like their Lodges. Mason Lodges are largely "official" based on mutual acknowledgement of authenticity between lodges. For example, the Mason lodges that accept...

Holy heck, Qaf doesn't do things by half-measures does he? Maxed Athletics and Brawl, near-max Investigation and Occult, and five dots in Professional Training... Though I will point out that you're missing out on a ton of Beats by maxing out two of your three Asset Skills. Not a criticism, just something I find kinda amusing.

Qaf can enter the scene whenever you like - just give me a heads-up OOC so I can have the Hierarch do something specific first.

  • While not outright stated, the wording of SoS's section on Mana Batteries implies that while a Create Tass spell does exist or is at least RAW-legal, the effects are temporary. Gimme a sec and I'll see about editing in the relevant quote.

It's less jarring if you think of him talking like Kratos post-Ragnarok, like when he's talking to Angrboda about Atreus.

The kitchen is cluttered, but clean, with relatively new appliances and a wide assortment of metal and wooden tools. Postcards written in Korean, Chinese, and Thai hand on the fridge, held in place by souvenir magnets from around the world. The ceiling has been painted as a surprisingly detailed depiction of a satellite-imaged storm system, which looks like it continues further on into the house. A teapot whistles quietly on the stovetop, sweet-smelling steam rising from the spout. An empty mug sits on the counter beside the stove, with a sticky note reading "Elpis" stuck to the side....

For context - Santiago looks and sounds like Christopher Judge doing Kratos' voice. Cloudchaser (Piper) is a meteorologist by trade, and maintains local weather monitoring stations for several agencies, companies, and The Factory. She also teaches at LAIU.

I'll leave it to your disgression as to how much you've interacted with the Hierarch in the past. He's a friendly -if distant- man, who generally tries to stay out of Skywatch and Mysterium affairs soas to avoid accusations of favoritism towards his wife. He's explicitly NOT the Epopt, according to every other Guardian.

    "Your early!"

It takes Elpis a moment to locate the speaker - a tall, dark man with a salt-and-peppered beard and a clean-shaven pate. Standing at the railing of the beacon, with his back to the sun, it takes a momentary squint to see that it is Santiago, the Hierarch. It's difficult to make out his expression, but he sounds fairly chipper.

"Piper's still down checking her monitoring stations, it will be an hour or so yet until she returns from Braem Wood. You are free to shiver out there if you like - there is a pleasant view...
